Lecture on digital media

In this lecture we learnt about different examples of how digital media has been used to enhance narrative experiences and discovered that whilst designing our own we don't have to be limited by the physical space available as there is also the possibility of exploring the use of virtual space.

Possible digital media options to include:
  • 3D animation
  • Game development
  • Virtual reality
  • Augmented reality
With a game the participant is controlling the narrative but with a film or video embedded in the experience, the viewer is watching a fixed narrative controlled by the makers of the environment.

Virtual reality
With a film or prepared visual sequence, there will inevitably be a lack of interaction from the person experiencing the environment whereas a game presents them with a challenge, forcing them to physically and/or cognitively engage with the topic.
However with things like video games the player can become so emerged in the virtual world that they become less willing to interact with the real world, which in some cases can cause anti social behaviour.

Augmented reality
This form of digital media is probably a slightly healthier one as it seems to tackle the problem virtual reality faces in making the viewer completely immersed in a fictional world. Augmented reality combines both the virtual world and the real world, showing the viewer different dimensions to existing space. This form of digital media has also been proven to improve visitor engagement in galleries.

An agile approach refers to an interactive, incremental method of managing the design and development that aim to provide digital products or services in a highly flexible and interactive manner.
